Land
From soil forensics to land use, we’re unearthing the landscapes that sustain us and are making sure that they’re still around for generations to come.
We’re unearthing solutions that protect the land beneath us and innovations that could restore balance to our ecosystems. With your support, we can continue making breakthroughs that tackle the threats to our precious landscapes for future generations.
From analysing the soil beneath our feet, to changing how our land is farmed, we’re putting research into practice and making strides to protect our landscapes from climate crisis. We co-design approaches that conserve Scotland’s iconic habitats and implement our knowledge into future sustainable land management systems. From ecologists to forensic specialists, our expertise has the potential to impact everyone.
Climate-positive farming at Glensaugh
One of the ways we have implemented significant positive change is through our Climate-Positive Farming Initiative at Glensaugh. This one-of-a-kind project tests best-practice and innovative techniques to reduce farming emissions, while protecting profitability. Land managers are under extreme pressure to tackle climate change and sustain the land for future use. The research we’ve undertaken at Glensaugh holds the key to solving this. Identified as a centre of excellence, we are providing practical, scalable, measurable and actionable research and land management alternative that are serving as a best-practice model for farmers across the country.
Benefits far beyond the farm
Our work at Glensaugh is driving meaningful change across Scotland already with the potential to impact far beyond. Through site visits, education and AR technology, we can provide farmers and landowners with hands-on insight into how the future of farming could look. And we never keep our learnings to ourselves – knowledge sharing is a key component of our work.
This is your chance to support research and innovation that provides multidisciplinary expertise, robust data and practical solutions for the change that one of our oldest and essential professions needs today.
‘With technical infrastructure in place and having access to James Hutton’s world class research, Glensaugh really is the place to gather farmers and other stakeholders to generate the new thinking to bring resilience of our farming sector and their supply chains.”’

We are dedication to the land we all call home and the various ways that our research can help protect it for generations to come. With the climate crisis looming, our work has never been more important. With your help, we can continue solving tomorrow’s problems, today.
Your support could help us:
- Protect and restore Scotland’s iconic habitats and ecosystems
- Fund the brightest minds in social science and ecology
- Carry out practical research on site and fund the equipment to do so
- Continue operating our world-leading Centre for Forensic Soil Science
- Take our findings and share them with as many communities as possible

OUR SCIENCE IN ACTION
Expert soil-evidence in more than 100 criminal investigations
The Institute’s Centre for Forensic Soil Science has provided expert soil-evidence in more than 100 criminal investigations, helping link trace soil on items of clothing, footwear or tools to specific locations with ‘negligible chance’ of alternate origin.
