Energy
We’re unearthing new ways to fuel a more sustainable future through advanced energy solutions and circular systems that reduce waste and carbon.
We’re unearthing revolutionary energy solutions that work towards fueling a more sustainable future. With your support we can turn our innovations into real impact by making circular systems that cut carbon and eliminate waste more accessible for a sustainable future.
The need for sustainable, renewable energy sources has never been more critical. And as people and government look for new ways of sustaining future life, we are at the forefront of developing the answers. The James Hutton Institute’s innovative initiatives are built to support rural communities, empowering them to thrive through clean, renewable energy. And as a charity, without the support of donations and funding, these exciting developments would come to a halt.
Hydroglen
Agriculture has been identified as a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and faces mounting challenges from climate change and rising energy costs. The James Hutton Institute’s HydroGlen pilot project is a pioneering on-site hydrogen production, compression and storage model at Glensaugh farm. Its aim is to transform energy supply for rural communities, allowing them to sustain themselves and thrive with renewable energy that fuels their homes, machinery and transport. This could be the self-reliant energy solution for the agricultural sector that we have all been searching for.
HygroGlen is the first-of-its-kind showing that we are always at the forefront of solving the planet’s toughest challenges. By integrating renewable energy infrastructure with climate-positive farming practices, HydroGlen demonstrates the potential for rural areas to become energy independent, mitigate climate change impacts and reduce carbon emissions. It will also act as a practical demonstrator of the feasibility of hydrogen farms in Scotland and the UK, allowing farming communities and cooperatives to visit and acquire new knowledge. Designed with scalability in mind, HydroGlen is modular and scalable, meaning that the components can be used to fit the unique needs of any farm.
“We’re building a cutting-edge pilot farm-scale green hydrogen and renewable facility. This will drive innovation for a more sustainable future.”
Niamh Carr, Development Officer, James Hutton Institute
Through this project, and many others, we’re working to build a foundation for a greener, more resilient future. And with your help, we can solve tomorrow’s problems, today.
Your support could help us:
- Roll out our HydroGlen model to new sites and conditions
- Start unearthing the next discovery in energy stability
- Create knowledge-sharing hubs to empower more communities to go green
- Advance carbon capture and storage research to help balance our planet’s future

Our Science In Action
Evidence shaping where Scotland’s renewable energy can grow sustainably
Over 25% of Scotland’s land area is used for renewable energy generation, and the James Hutton Institute provides the land-use, soil, water and environmental evidence that underpins decisions on where wind, solar and hydro assets can be developed sustainably
